Aside from just using Tomato, I have also been working on tweaking the stock Tomato firmware to gain higher performance from the router. These are some of the changes that Ive made to the stock firmware:

`9 V7 W" ~# O2 Q2 b1 D% i" t+ C1. Updated certain key netfilter ip_conntrack versions from Linux kernel 2.4.20 to 2.4.21 and 2.4.29. The later Linux kernels use a faster and better hashing algorithm for the networking core, which makes routing faster.( E$ n9 Q# ^! n
2 F* v' t$ P* X0 J# f
2. Increase the hashtable sizes for ip_conntrack and IP destination route cache to speed up routing.! P! W% k* b# a
. }# p7 r$ \ T9 L% R0 l3 F
3. Replaced the Jenkins hashing algorithm used by certain key netfilter components with a faster one, the Murmurhash from http://murmurhash.googlepages.com.

With these changes, these little routers should be able to handle about 8000 connections (limited by their 16MB of RAM) while implementing uplink port-based QOS, and still remain responsive. Ive been in contact with Jon (author of the Tomato firmware) and he may integrate some or all these changes into the stock firmware in the future.
